Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never been to therapy before. What should I expect?

First of all, congratulations for simply showing up.  It’s very normal to feel some anxiety before coming to your first session.  We will do our best to make you feel safe.  If you have any special needs or fears please let us know so that we can establish a productive therapeutic relationship together.  There are incredible benefits to therapy, as well as some risks.  We are happy to talk to you about them.  Before beginning any change, it can be helpful to visualize where you are and where you would like to be.  Dan has posted one example of a guided imagery exercise to help you start that process.

Who do you see?

We see men, women, children, couples, and families, for a variety of issues.  Primarily, we specialize in working with individuals, couples, groups, and families with issues pertaining to sexual addiction and compulsivity.  In addition to a specialization treating sex addiction, Dan works with adolescents, those facing relational difficulties, those with anxiety or depression, those with process addictions including internet addiction and video game addiction, and those with issues pertaining to their religion or spirituality.

How long and how often are your sessions?

While the duration of therapy depends upon many factors, we typically see clients for a 50 minute session one time per week.  For couples or those new to recovery, we frequently offer a 90 minute session once per week in order to maximize the therapeutic gains.  We are committed to seeing you only for as long as you are receiving benefit from therapy and/or until your original issues are resolved.  For some clients, this process can take 6 sessions, and for others this can take years.  We work closely with you from the beginning of the process so we can determine what goals you have for therapy as well as a vision for when therapy will be complete.

Do I need to do anything before my first session?

Before we meet,  you will need to fill out paperwork.  Please give yourself 15 minutes before our first session to fill out the forms.  We will have the paperwork for you in the waiting area before your session.  We will generally use the first session to go over forms, answer any questions you have, do an assessment, and to begin working on a plan to meet your treatment goals.

When does therapy end?

Therapy ends when you have met your goals for coming, if you are no longer benefiting from counseling, and/or when your problems, relationship, and life are more manageable.  We think therapy works best as a collaborative process, so we will talk with you from the beginning about how we will both know when it is time for you to move on.

Why should I go to therapy?

Some people are able to deal with problems on their own or with close friends or family.  Many, however, need a professional to help them through difficult seasons in their lives. If you are an individual facing addiction, or if your partner or family member is an addict, it is vital to receive professional help.  Because of the shame, pain, destruction, and consequences of addiction, especially sex addiction, it is really important to receive professional help to maximize potential for sobriety and minimize destruction related to sexual acting out.

Aren’t 12-step programs enough?

Some individuals do find that 12-step programs are enough to get them sober and heal their relationships.  However, many find that the complexities of addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma in their relationships, and personality factors are too much to deal with on their own.  We are available for those that do need more support to achieve sobriety and heal relationships.

What are your fees?

Therapy is an investment in yourself, your relationships, and in your healing.  We do offer a sliding scale on a reserved basis for those who have limited resources, and we can work together to find a payment option that makes sense for you and your budget.

What kind of payment methods do you accept?

We accept payment via cash, check, debit card, or credit card.

Do you take insurance?

We do not accept insurance, but we are happy to provide you a superbill for your sessions that you can submit to your insurance company.  Various PPO insurance plans accept superbills from out of network providers.  Often times those that are able to avoid insurance and managed care are more able to determine their healthcare decisions, rather than having their insurance companies dictate the care that they can or cannot receive.

What is a “Good Faith Estimate”?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
